Why you're running two apps, and what to do about it
Search for a way to track your car and your money together and you get sent in one of two directions — a fuel log with no budget, or a budget with a 'Car' category. Here's the shape of both families, honestly.
The two families of app
Vehicle and fuel-log apps — Fuelly, Drivvo, Fuelio, aCar, Simply Auto and similar. These are genuinely good at what they do: odometer readings, fuel consumption trends, cost per kilometer, service intervals, reminders, sometimes community fuel-economy data. What none of them do is your groceries, your rent or your salary. They are a ledger for one asset, not for a household.
Personal budgeting apps — YNAB, Bluecoins, Spendee, PocketGuard, MoneyWiz, Money Pro, Actual Budget and the rest. Also good at what they do: categories, envelopes, accounts, reports, often bank import. But a car is modeled as a category with a number in it. There is no odometer, no liters, no consumption, no service interval, no cost per kilometer — because from a budgeting app's point of view, fuel is just a €90 expense at a gas station.
The gap between them is why people end up entering every tank of fuel twice, and why searching for "budgeting app with a car expense tracker" mostly returns one or the other.
The third option everyone eventually tries
A spreadsheet. It genuinely works — one sheet for transactions, one per vehicle, formulas for consumption — and it's how a lot of people run this for years. What to check before you switch to anything
- Does a refuel record an odometer reading? Without it there is no consumption math, only a spend total.
- Does the vehicle spend reach your budget automatically, or is there an export step?
- Can one vehicle hold two fuel types? Anything else breaks on a plug-in hybrid or an LPG conversion.
- Can you read economy the way you think about it — L/100km or MPG?
- Does a back-dated foreign transaction use that day's exchange rate, or today's? Most apps quietly use today's, which is wrong forever after.
- What happens offline, given that gas stations and underground parking lots have bad signal?
- Where does the data live, and can you get it out?
